So Westboro pickets anything they think God hates. The funerals of gays, the funerals of those killed in the NIU shootings. I don't have the energy sometimes to think about how this can even be happening.
Well, they are coming to U of Chicago. Because we are the place where "the beast" (Obama) has some roots and because God hates us I guess.
U of Chicago students are organizing a protest. Why protest a protest? I think it will just feed into their stupid ideas. (Stupid isn't strong enough. Really, I feel like their hate is draining me of my energy).
My ideas? I don't know. So far I wish instead of protesting that we would all wear shirts that say "God loves the members of Westboro church, and ________________." I want to show them love somehow, but I don't know that if I came face to face with them I could.
The blanks will be filled in differently on different people's shirts. Examples?
a. homosexuals
b. transgendered
c. obama
d. married couples
e. divorced couples
f. you
g. me
i. heterosexuals
j. atheists
k. muslims
You get the idea... all people. God loves all people.

I'll wear one! When are they coming?
March 9th. I'll send you their schedule via email, otherwise I think it is on their website... www.godhatesfags.com
Want to be in charge of the tshirt/love protest?
I like the tshirt idea. Love IS greater than hate! (Should be anyway).
This is a fantastic idea. I was on campus the day they visited NIU, and was so scared of what I'd do if I saw them that I refused to leave my dorm the entire day. These people make me so upset and frustrated. I think your t-shirt idea is the perfect answer to this paradox.
Agreed— I think the t-shirt idea is very clever. However, I honestly do not know how to respond to the Westboro Baptist Church folks. They prey on creating pseudo-events such as these and positively revel in stirring up controversy among passersby. They get off on the fact that they get a rash response from any and all people, whether they have or have not contributed to the squalor.
I liken dealing with them as you would a terrorist group or any other cult: with extreme caution and prepared with an understanding that they are probably not going to digest a word of what you have to say. Perhaps the most effective way to deal with them is to shield them from the people who are going to feel the brunt of their hate (e.g. funeral and memorial attendees).
Regardless, I applaud your efforts. I wish I could be a part of this, but I will undoubtedly be at work. Let's talk more about it at another time, though; I would like to hear more of your ideas and frustrations with the situation.
check out my post - it has you in it :) http://www.andrewmeans.typepad.com/tmeans/
